Tagaytay City
A city two hours from Manila blessed with cool climate and iconic views of the famous Taal Lake, Tagaytay is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Luzon. It overlooks Manila Bay to the north, Taal Volcano and Taal Lake to the south, and Laguna de Bay to the east. On a clear day, the view of Taal Volcano in its entire majestic splendor is a breathtaking sight. The misty fogs that envelop the hillsides invoke a romantic and sentimental mood, making the city a favorite destination for lovers – and families alike.
Tagaytay, Philippines
Culture & Lifestyle
Aside from panoramic views from all corners of the city, Tagaytay is blessed with pineapples, growing abundantly all year round throughout the lush hillsides. Tagaytay’s pineapples are definitely comparable – if not better – than those found in other countries. The city honors their pineapple produce with an annual festival called Pilipinyahan.
Tagaytay is a melting pot of southern Luzon culture. It is well known and much loved for its culinary delights: bulalo, a rich soup made from beef bone marrows; tilapia, a succulent local fish; and tawilis, a small fish best served smoked or dried. You can get these at affordable prices. Just talk to vendors in the market in English or try communicating with them (and everyone else) in Tagalog, the language in which almost 94% of residents speak.
Be forewarned that Tagaytay gets the most number of visitors during the Holy Week as travelers take the opportunity to de-stress and relax during their weeklong vacation. Along Aguinaldo Highway you can see group reenactments of the Passion of Christ, with colorful warriors wearing finely-carved masks to represent Roman soldiers during Christ’s time. On a regular day, you can sit back on your porch and enjoy the view and cool winds, go horseback riding, hike to Taal Volcano, or take a boat ride in Taal Lake.
Health Care
The top hospital in the city is Tagaytay Hospital and Medical Center, sometimes called Unihealth Tagaytay Hospital and Medical Center located along Aguinaldo Highway. This modern health care facility has 50 to 100 inpatient beds and has laboratory and diagnostic services. It aims to be the premier health care provider in Southern Luzon by 2020 and obtain certification from international health care bodies. Other hospitals in the city include:
- Ospital ng Tagaytay
- Tagaytay Medicare Hospital
- DLSU – Dr. Rodolfo R. Poblete Memorial Hospital
Local Government
The city is governed by Mayor Agnes Tolentino, DMD, whose leadership aims to make Tagaytay a resort, retirement haven, and a character city.
Getting Around
If you are not bringing your car, you can easily find your way around Tagaytay through public transport. You can access most points of interest by a single main road, Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway, riding a jeepney. We recommend knowing which jeepney to take when getting to your target destination. Those with signs ‘People’s Park in the Sky’ at the Olivarez Plaza near the Tagaytay Rotunda will take you to People’s Park in the Sky, Picnic Grove, Tagaytay Public Market, Good Shepherd Convent, Japanese Garden, Tagaytay Gymnasium, and Development Academy of the Philippines. Jeeps with ‘Nasugbu’ or ‘Mendez’ signboard will take you to the Mendez Junction, Mahogany Market, Casino Filipino, Antonio’s Restaurant, Sonya’s Garden, Bag of Beans, Josephine’s Restaurant, Mushroom Burger, Caleruega Church, Taal Vista Hotel, Tagaytay City Hall, and Splendido Taal Golf and Country Club. If you want to catch a boat ride to get to the Taal Volcano Island, ride on a jeep bound for Talisay. Know that tricycles can take you into the side streets of the sloping Tagaytay hills, which cannot be reached by jeepneys.
