Culture & Lifestyle

Bohol is a land of history and heroic people. The island-province stood witness to the blood compact between Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna during the Spanish regime in the Philippines, as well as the longest revolt against Spanish colonialism led by Francisco Dagohoy. You will discover that the people of Bohol, also called Bol-anon, are very sweet and hospitable. The community life is tight-knit. Everyone in the community knows everyone else.

Farming is the major source of livelihood for many, and almost every family has a parcel of land to live and cultivate. Fishing is another important economic activity since the province is surrounded by seas. Tourism is also a top industry in the province. With its many natural wonders like the Chocolate Hills, unique wildlife such as the tarsier monkey, fantastic beaches and dive sites, majestic age-old churches, historical monuments and museums, no wonder a lot of tourists travel to Bohol to experience the fun and adventure the island has to offer.

Among the most beautiful destinations in Bohol is Panglao Island. Alona Beach is the most popular tourist spot on the island, known for its white sand and clear blue waters. This beach is lined with several restaurants and bars and offers a lot of attractions, including scuba diving, island hopping, dolphin watching, snorkeling, kite surfing, and fishing.

    Health Care

Bohol hospitals and health care system has improved dramatically in recent years. Medical establishments in the province are categorized into several divisions, including rural medical care units, medical centers, and governmental hospitals. Here are some of the health care facilities you can visit in Bohol:

    • Borja Family Hospital Corporation
    • Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital
    • Don Emilio Del Valle Memorial Hospital
    • Englewood Hospital
    • Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Regional Hospital
    • Holy Name University
    • MMG Bohol Cooperative Hospital
    • Tagbilaran Puericulture Center and Maternity House
    • Tagbilaran Maternity and Children’s Hospital

      Local Government

Bohol is a first-class province subdivided into three congressional districts, 46 municipalities, and one city, Tagbilaran. Governor Edgardo Chatto, Vice Governor Conception Lim, and a provincial board govern the province. The mainland of Bohol is surrounded by about 70 smaller islands, all under the jurisdiction of the Bohol Provincial Government.

      Getting Around

Once you are in Bohol, there are several ways to get around the island. You can find plenty of tricycles and some taxis waiting to bring you to most locations within Tagbilaran and neighboring towns. You can hail a cab at the pier, airport, or malls. For short distances within Tagbilaran or small towns, tricycle is your best option. If you need to go to other municipalities, you have the choice of jeepneys, buses, van-for-hire (air-conditioned mini-vans), or even habal-habal (motorcycle).
