Baguio
Known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio’s main attraction is its cold weather. The city is situated at an altitude of 1,540 meters in the tropical pine forests of Luzon. It is wet during the rainy season from June to October, but becomes a tropical paradise from November to May – a refreshing break from the hot and humid climate in the rest of the Philippines. Christmas is when you get the nippy winter air. Baguio is the only city in the province of Benguet, bounded on the north by the capital town of La Trinidad, on the east by Itogon, and on the south and west by Tuba.

Culture & Lifestyle
Built as a playground of Americans in the 1900s, Baguio will captivate the child in you. Many immigrants have been enthralled by the warmth – or rather coolness – of the city and made it their home. Highly urbanized and vibrant, Baguio has a lot to offer. Take a boat ride at Burnham Park for Php 60. Visit BenCab Museum for Php 100 and see the masterpieces of National Artist Ben Cabrera. Stroll around Session Road and shop for souvenir items or in thrift shops famously known as ‘ukay-ukay’. Be sure to spot branded items at bargain prices. You can enjoy their famous pinikpikan meal for Php20 and take a jeepney ride around town for Php 8.50.
Baguio depends a lot on tourism and its educational institutions. During Holy Week or long breaks, expect Filipinos coming in from different parts of the country to take much-needed relaxation and recreation. Baguio has at least eight colleges and universities and nearly half of the city’s population are students from nearby provinces, with foreign students to add to the diversity. Baguio is also a commercial hub with many agricultural products and mining goods passing through for processing, sale, or distribution.
The city is home to PEZA-accredited business park, Baguio City Economic Zone, housing several firms that specialize in knitted clothing, small components for vehicles, electronics, and computer parts. Outsourcing companies also abound in Baguio, contributing to the city’s economy and employment. Tourism also adds to the city’s economy. John Hay Air Station, more popularly known as Camp John Hay, is a major tourist attraction. Camp John Hay was once a major hill station used by US Air Force personnel and dependents for rest and recreation and now a famous recreation area with a baseball field, golf course, and several restaurants, shops, and hotels.
Local Government
Baguio has become the center of business and commerce as well as of education in the entire Northern Luzon, making it the seat of government of the Cordillera Administrative Region. It is governed by Mayor Mauricio Domogan. Since Baguio is a highly urbanized city with its own charter, it is not subjected to the jurisdiction of Benguet province, of which it was formerly a part.
Getting Around
It is easy to get around the city, and you have four options to do so. One, you can take a cab to save up on gas or parking fee. Flat rate is Php 35 for the first 500 meters with Php 2 per 100-meter increments thereafter. Second, ride a jeep. It’s a cheaper alternative to cab when you are riding alone, but only recommended when you know your way around. Third, take your car. Surely, you can go anywhere with private transport especially if you have other people with you. Finally, walk! You can explore Baguio on foot after you have taken any of the three options. Like local folks, go for a stroll in parks and gardens – surely a healthy way to go!
